Commenting on Comments

As an avid outdoor blogger I love reading and responding to comments. Hit counters can show trends in what people are clicking on, but the comments are where I can see if my writing is actually connecting with people. I write this blog for myself. I am not sponsored (but am open to it), I am not anyone’s prostaff (but I am open to it), and I don’t do many product reviews on products that ate given to be by companies (really open to that one). So when I see a new comment I get excited. I wrote something worthy of someone leaving a comment. It means someone read my writing and had a reactionand they want to have a conversation.  That connection builds community and friendship. So a comment is not an ego boost, but a sign I am not alone and there is a person facing the monitor who potentally values what I create.

Then I get this in my email…

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Lake Kaweah is Looking Pretty Low.":

OK Anonymous, what do you think?

Thank you… I think?
Hey another comment…
“A two person hot tubs is the natural sanitizing properties of salt water. If selecting a Hot Tub with out having even considered the strength of the hot tub cover by yourself. You need to make the allowances for the weight of the hot tub and gets to talk about what has been happening in their day, Or perhaps the latest news. Also, being in the tub water. If your want to buy one because it is divine, while a Jacuzzi makes the above hot tubs as it doesn't" gas off" at spa temperatures. My web blog: chamonix transfers” on Grilled Gopher Fish

What does that have to do with gopher fish or cooking? I think you are cooking your fish wrong. Hot tubs are not for cooking.
What else is here?

“For newest information you have to visit world wide web and on the web I found this web site as a best web page for most up-to-date updates. Feel free to surf to my web-site social Bookmark on My Lures Work!” on Kayak Fishing at Leffingwell Landing.
That is solid advice…
“Thanks very nice blog! my website เต็นท์ผ้าใบ” on Active Duty? Visit All the National Parks for Free!

“Next time I read a blog, Hopefully it doesn't fail me as much as this particular one. After all, Yes, it was my choice to read, but I genuinely believed you would probably have something helpful to talk about. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you can fix if you weren't too busy looking for attention. payday loans Feel free to surf my blog payday loans dallas” on It has been too long.
You’re going to spam me, tell me the post sucks, insult me, and then invite me to a payday loan blog??? That type of behavior is not even suitable for a spam bot. You need to go back to spam edicate school.
I just hope there is a special place in Hell for spammers and people who program spam-bots. This is just a small sampling of the spam I get. I know others who get much more. I am just glad the filters catch most of it before it posts and pollutes your day the way it does mine. If this bothers you as well make my day and throw a comment in the block.

Thanks for reading,

  1. Same here Dan, I had to turn on comment filtering because of the spam stuff. JGR

    1. I still got them before I allowed anonymous comments, but the blogger spam filter does a pretty good job at filtering it all. All of the comments I quoted were form the filter, but I still get the email there is a new comment, so the let down is just the same.

  2. death to all hackers and spammers... I am a web developer for a living and have spent way to much of my life defending my clients from hackers and spam.. its such a time suck.. I am not a violent person but wouldn't mind delivering a big ole Texas Style A$$ Whoopin...on a few of these pukes...

    1. I have been a moderator on two forums that were completely disabled due to hackers spaming the site with porn. I say we go get them Joe! :D

  3. Hey Daniel. I think we all get them. The spam filter does a good job. I think I get maybe one or two per year that sneak through. I also get an anonymous now and then from Yuki, but I can always tell it's him because he has all those Japanese characters on it.

    1. It is just amazing how many I get a day. I wonder if it really sells anything, or if it is more about spreading viral code.

    2. Daniel, you got it right with the spreading of viral code. The spam bots are systematically spreading their love throughout websites looking for unmonitored comment systems so they can anchor text link whatever website they are trying to rank for, SEO or otherwise. Although I have several spam protections up and protecting all my websites, they still sneak through the system once in awhile.

On the OBN alone one of my spam systems (one I highly recommend) says, "Akismet has protected your site from 39,488 spam comments already" --- Askimet is like bug spray for spammers!

Are you seeing all these spam comments come through your system? If so...get something like Askimet and you'll never be bothered by the majority of them. Askimet nets them up for you (no emails bugging you) and once in a while you can go through them in your admin on your system and empty them all in one click.

    3. I get them in the spam filter. I disable and delete the few that do get through. They seem to go after .coms and forums more than blogs on networks. Thanks for the advice and the comment. That might make a good blog in its self.

  4. I absolutely agree. Like you I write for myself but do take a sense of pride in what I do when it inspires others to comment. Huge let down when it is just an advertisement. Keep up the good work though and don't be disheartened, I for one will keep reading.

  5. Oh man, that "All I hear is a bunch of whining...feel free to surf my blog..." comment made me laugh! I like reading your blog brotha, keep it up.

Tell me what you think. All spam will be deleted. Google account users don't need Capcha verifications anymore so tell me what you think.
